  • Experience addressing nutrition and equipment needs

  • Increases the ability of the patient to cope with the illness

  • Increases caregiver confidence

ALS is a disease of the parts of the nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. The word amyotrophic means “without muscle nourishment,” and refers to the loss of signals the nerves normally send to the muscles. Lateral means “to the side,” and refers to the location of the damage in the spinal cord. Sclerosis means “hardened,” and refers to the hardened nature of the spinal cord in advanced ALS. These patients have complex and constantly changing medical needs. ALS often strikes in midlife, when patients may have active careers, parenting responsibilities and family commitments.

The challenges that come with ALS are unique and the patient and family benefit from the interdisciplinary approach of the NorthCare Hospice & Palliative Care team. We are experienced in the complicated multi-system effects of the disease and collaborate with the Kansas City ALS Association to provide patients and families with the resources they need to meet their personal goals.
