Only 180 days until NorthCare Hospice House Opens

The community received an early holiday present when construction started on NorthCare Hospice House in the former 2 East wing at North Kansas City Hospital. Old ceilings tiles are down. Outdated cabinets, counters and sinks are removed and the plastered entrance to the Hospital’s Gift of Life Garden is being reopened. It will soon be ready to become a homelike environment for 16 hospice patients needing help with pain and symptom management. Families, friends and even pets will be able to visit around-the-clock. Our goal is to open in summer 2010 or in a short 180 days.

“It is like putting the pieces together in a jigsaw puzzle,” states Kim Logan, NorthCare Executive Director. “Some pieces fit in easily and some pieces are a challenge. When the puzzle is finished with help from all of our community supporters, it will be a serene place for our patients and families during this last chapter.”

In August 2009, Stephanie Boscarino was hired as Project Manager for NorthCare Hospice House. She brings experience working in hospice and long-term care in both Kansas City and Ohio. She hit the ground running and has been working with Jerry Husman, the Hospital’s Vice President of Facilities, and Kurt Broeckleman, Project Leader with HMN Architects, on everything from state regulations, design and furnishings. It has been and continues to be an adventure. “We will meet a community need in providing care and comfort to hospice patients and support to their families. Our hospice house will be the only one in the Northland. It will be close to residents living north of the river, in eastern Jackson County and Wyandotte County,” says Stephanie Boscarino.

EntryNorthCare Hospice House project will cost over $1,600,000. These costs include renovation of 2E including a new outside entrance and gardens, furnishings and start-up operating costs. “We are grateful to North Kansas City Hospital (Board of Trustees) for donating $1,000,000 for renovations. In addition, community supporters have donated $257,000 towards this project. Our goal over the next 180 days is to raise the remainder plus funds for charitable care and an endowment,” explains Kim Logan.

Entry“We have been impressed with the generosity of our donors and creativity of community supporters,” says Sue Svec, Director of Development. Sue explains that a NorthCare employee, Rachel Foote, held a Halloween party at a church hall in Kearney that raised $781. The Sure West Foundation donated $1,000 because one of their employees attended this event and told his employer about the hospice house project. In another example, Northland Festivals donated $5,000 for the children’s play areas. “Family members who have had their loved ones in other hospice houses and live in the Northland have selected NorthCare Hospice House as their charity of choice. Every dime, dollar or hundreds of dollars donated helps us,” adds Sue.
