Building NorthCare Hospice Residence Great news travels fast
“I have some great news,” says Kim Logan, Executive Director of NorthCare Hospice. “Through a partnership with North Kansas City Hospital, a newly vacant wing of the Hospital will be renovated to accommodate our hospice residence by summer, 2010. This new site only became available recently.”
Because of growing community needs for a hospice house, in the fall of 2008, NorthCare Hospice kicked off a campaign to build the first hospice house in the Northland. The original plan was to locate this program in a building on the north side of the North Kansas City Hospital campus. This project was estimated to cost $7.5 million.
“We certainly did not anticipate the current economic situation nor the increasing costs of renovating this site when we started our journey to create NorthCare Hospice House,” says Kim.
“North Kansas City Hospital is a long-time supporter of hospice care,” says David Carpenter, North Kansas City Hospital President and CEO. “The new plan brings a much needed service, more quickly to the community and allows for use of existing resources.”
The Hospital will fund renovation of the space at a cost of $1 million. NorthCare will lease the space and operate this program.

“We are thrilled this opportunity allows us to move forward with our dream. It will be a special place for patients and their loved ones to be cared for and comforted during the last chapter in their life.” says Betty Sue Cliff, a Friend of NorthCare Hospice.” We are able to recycle an existing space, decrease the cost, and open sooner,”
NorthCare Hospice Residence will be a home-like environment with 16 beds, a spiritual center, family kitchen, children’s play area and much more. It will have a separate outside entrance for families, friends and pets to use for visiting with their loved ones 24 hours a day, seven days a week. .”
Fundraising continues for our hospice residence. “Our goal is to raise a minimum of $500,000,” says Sue Svec, Director of Development, NorthCare Hospice. “ We have received $200,000 towards this goal. Donations will help initial startup and operating costs, provide charity care, assist with special projects, and build an endowment. Your support is needed on our Opening Our Doors campaign. ”
